Deload Weeks

Performance = Freshness – Fatigue (the deload)

Unlocking your full potential as an athlete, ensuring you’re performing at your best week in and week out is what most crave. A topic that often comes up in the strength and conditioning world is deload weeks—many athletes aren’t sure when, or if, they need one. I’m here to clear that up.

Deload Weeks Aren’t Always Necessary, But They Can Be Crucial.

First, let’s define a deload. A deload involves reducing your training volume or intensity (or both) for a brief period. But how do you know if you need one?

If you’re playing 80 minutes each week and consistently pushing yourself, it’s natural that the intensity of your training might need to be scaled back occasionally. A deload can help you stay fresh and perform your best on game day. Without it, you risk accumulating fatigue, which will eventually lead to a dip in your performance—something we definitely want to avoid.

Your S&C program is entering a new phase now, and progressive overload is essential for continued growth. But progress can’t always be linear. A deload week before moving into the next phase can give your body a chance to reset, allowing you to tackle the next phase with renewed energy and focus.

Remember: Stress, Recover, Adapt. Don’t skip the recovery part of the equation.

If you’re not seeing the progress you want—if you’re constantly sore, your lifts aren’t increasing, or your motivation is dipping—don’t add more. Take a step back. Sometimes, less is more.

A “minimum effective dose” approach works wonders. Reduce your sets and intensity for a week. For example, if you typically do four working sets, cut it down to two. You’ll still be training, but the reduced volume will allow your body to recover and perform better in the long run.

Plot twist if you have a well thought out programme that can manipulate loads well enough you’ll avoid needing a deload every 4-6 weeks.
